Dansgroep Haarlem explores humanity in times of conflict<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of Theater na de Dam, Dansgroep Haarlem presents the dance performance <\/strong>Tegenpool<\/em><\/strong> in De Koepel on May 4, 2026. Following the National Remembrance Day, the public is welcome at 9:00 PM.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Tegenpool the dancers of Dansgroep Haarlem explore the interconnectedness of extremes. Inspired by the Greek philosopher Heraclitus, who argued that opposites do not exist independently of one another but rather define one another, a physical dialogue unfolds between tension and balance, distance and proximity, conflict and harmony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Polarization as a starting point <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The theme of Theater na de Dam this year is: \u2018How to remain humane in times of conflict?\u2019 Artistic director and choreographer Haya Ma\u00ebla explains: \u201cPolarization is here to stay in our society. Increasingly, people perceive themselves as part of a \u2018camp,\u2019 viewing things from the perspective of us versus them. This can lead to conflict, condemnation, and alienation. Tegenpool poses the question: is opposition the only connection we still have with one another?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The philosopher Heraclitus (480 BC) suggests that contradictions are actually an expression of the same force or desire. In his view, opposites are by definition connected to one another and stem from the same source. We also find this concept reflected in Buddhist teachings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choreographer Haya Ma\u00ebla took to the dance floor with this premise and, together with her dancers, searched for that shared strength. Ma\u00ebla: \u201cIt is remarkable to see that dancers, by definition, work with opposites. After all, without opposing forces, there is no movement. Through dance, we reach the point where fear falls away and the desire for togetherness begins to prevail. A beautiful process that we love to share with many.\u201d And Theater na de Dam lends itself perfectly to this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
